Downtown Cebu City

1. Magellan's Cross

Housed in a small chapel-like kiosk beside the basilica, Magellan's Cross marks the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines in 1521. The original cross is said to be encased inside the wooden one you see today. Look up at the painted ceiling showing the baptism of Cebu's rulers. Our guide explains how to get to Magellan's Cross.

2. Basilica Minore del Santo Niño

Steps from the cross, this basilica houses the image of the Santo Niño, the Child Jesus, believed to be the oldest Catholic relic in the country. It is the spiritual heart of the Sinulog Festival. Dress modestly and be quiet during Mass. Its history goes back to the arrival of the Spanish in 1521.

3. Fort San Pedro

This small triangular fort near the port is one of the oldest Spanish-era fortifications in the country. Walk the walls, explore the small museum and enjoy the garden courtyard. It is a short walk from Plaza Independencia.

Uptown and the Hills

4. Taoist Temple

Set in the Beverly Hills subdivision, this colourful temple is a reminder of Cebu's large Chinese-Filipino community. Climb the steps for city views. Respect worship areas and photo restrictions.

5. Temple of Leah

Built in Busay as a tribute from a husband to his late wife, the Temple of Leah is a Roman-style structure with columns, statues and sweeping views. It is popular at sunset and for photo shoots. An entrance fee applies.

6. Tops Lookout

High up in Busay, Tops offers one of the best panoramic views of Metro Cebu and Mactan, especially after dark when the city lights glow. Bring a jacket; it gets breezy.

7. Sirao Flower Garden

Often nicknamed Cebu's "Little Amsterdam", this hillside garden is known for bright celosia blooms and photo props. It is best combined with the Temple of Leah and Tops on a half-day hill tour.

South Cebu

8. Kawasan Falls

The turquoise falls in Badian are Cebu's most famous swimming spot and the end point of the popular canyoneering route. Expect cool water, bamboo rafts and crowds at peak times. See our Kawasan Falls and canyoneering guide.

9. Moalboal

Moalboal is famous for its sardine run, where huge schools of sardines swirl just off the shore, plus sea turtles and nearby Pescador Island. It is a laid-back base for snorkelers and divers. Read our Moalboal guide.

10. Oslob

Oslob is best known for whale shark watching, an activity that has drawn debate over feeding practices and animal welfare. Nearby, Tumalog Falls and the town's old church ruins are worth a stop. Our article on Oslob whale sharks covers the ethics so you can decide.

11. Osmeña Peak

In the mountains of Dalaguete, Osmeña Peak is widely considered the highest point in Cebu. A short hike from the jump-off leads to jagged, grassy hills that look surreal at sunrise. Bring warm clothes for an early start.

12. Simala Shrine

The castle-like Monastery of the Holy Eucharist in Sibonga draws pilgrims from all over the country. Strict dress codes apply, so cover your shoulders and knees. Buses heading south from the city can drop you near the access road.

North Cebu

13. Bantayan Island

Bantayan offers powdery white sand, calm water and a slow island pace, especially around Santa Fe. Reach it via a bus to Hagnaya port and a ferry. Our guide explains how to reach Bantayan Island.

14. Malapascua Island

This small island off the northern tip of Cebu is a diving favourite, known for the chance to see thresher sharks at dawn dives. Even non-divers love its beaches and sunsets. Take a bus to Maya port, then a boat across.

Practical Tips for Visiting Cebu Tourist Spots

  • Start early. Traffic in Metro Cebu can be heavy, and southern spots are best in the morning.
  • Carry cash. Many rural attractions charge small entrance or environmental fees and may not accept cards.
  • Respect sacred sites. Dress modestly at churches, temples and Simala.
  • Check the weather. Typhoons and heavy rain can close falls, hikes and boat trips. Check the forecast before you go.
  • Budget ahead. Small fees, boat rentals and transport add up across several days.
