Here is how to get to Bantayan Island: take a bus or van from Cebu City's North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio, about 3 to 4 hours, then a ferry of roughly 1 hour to Santa Fe on Bantayan. From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, add a taxi or ride-hailing trip to the North Bus Terminal first. The whole journey usually takes 5 to 7 hours door to door, depending on traffic and ferry schedules.

Step 1: Get to the Cebu North Bus Terminal

The North Bus Terminal is in Mandaue City, near SM City Cebu. It is the departure point for buses to northern Cebu, including Hagnaya.

  • From Cebu City: a taxi or ride-hailing car is easiest. Jeepneys also pass the area if you know the routes.
  • From Mactan-Cebu International Airport: take an airport taxi or book a ride-hailing car to the North Bus Terminal. Traffic on the bridges between Mactan and the mainland can be heavy, so allow extra time. Our guide to Mactan airport taxis explains your options.

Step 2: Bus or van to Hagnaya Port

At the North Bus Terminal, look for buses or vans with "Hagnaya" on the signboard. Some buses are ordinary (non-aircon), while others are air-conditioned. Vans are often faster but more cramped.

  • Buses usually run frequently from early morning.
  • The trip takes about 3 to 4 hours, longer in heavy traffic.
  • Some operators sell combined bus-and-ferry tickets. Ask at the terminal.

The route passes through northern towns before reaching the port in San Remigio. Watch your bags and keep valuables with you.

Step 3: Ferry from Hagnaya to Santa Fe

Ferries from Hagnaya Port sail to Santa Fe, the main tourist town on Bantayan Island. The crossing takes about one hour. Several ferry companies operate the route, with departures through the day.

  • Buy your ticket at the port and pay the terminal fee.
  • Departure times can change because of weather or demand. Arrive early on weekends and holidays.
  • When the coast guard suspends sea trips due to bad weather, ferries do not sail. Check PAGASA warnings before travelling and read our explainer on PAGASA typhoon signals.

Step 4: From Santa Fe port to your resort

Tricycles wait at the Santa Fe port to take passengers to resorts along the beaches. Agree on the fare before you get in. Many resorts can also arrange a pick-up if you message them in advance.

When to go to Bantayan Island

SeasonMonths (approx.)What to expect
Dry seasonDecember to MayCalmer seas, sunny weather, peak crowds around Holy Week
Rainy seasonJune to NovemberFewer tourists, lower rates, higher risk of rough seas and cancelled trips

Holy Week is one of Bantayan's busiest times, with large numbers of visitors and religious processions. Book accommodation and transport well ahead if you go then. For a month-by-month view, see our guide to the best time to visit Cebu and Davao.

Practical tips

  • Bring cash. ATMs on the island are limited and can run out of cash at busy times.
  • Start early. The last ferry of the day can fill up, and missing it means staying overnight near the port.
  • Pack light. You will carry your bags on and off buses, ferries and tricycles.
  • Protect the beach. Take your trash with you and avoid single-use plastics.
  • Rent a motorbike only if you are experienced, and always wear a helmet.

Bantayan works well as part of a longer trip. Our Cebu itinerary for 3 to 5 days shows how to fit it in.
