Going from Davao to Cebu by land means combining a bus and a ferry, because Mindanao and Cebu are separate islands. The two main routes are a bus from Davao to Cagayan de Oro followed by an overnight ferry to Cebu, or a bus to Surigao, a RoRo to Southern Leyte, and then road and sea travel to Cebu. Either way, plan on roughly 18 hours to more than a day, compared with about an hour by plane.

All times are rough and depend on traffic, weather, waiting time at ports and the sailing schedule. Check the road distance between cities with our distance calculator.

Route 1: Davao to Cagayan de Oro, then ship to Cebu

This is the most popular overland route and the easiest for first-timers.

Davao to Cagayan de Oro by bus

Buses leave Davao's main bus terminal (the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal, often called Ecoland terminal) for Cagayan de Oro throughout the day. The usual road goes north through Bukidnon, with mountain scenery and cooler air around Malaybalay. Expect roughly 6-9 hours depending on traffic, stops and road works.

Bus companies serving Mindanao routes include Rural Transit and Bachelor Express, among others; schedules and classes (ordinary vs air-conditioned) vary, so ask at the terminal or check the operators' official pages.

Cagayan de Oro to Cebu by ship

From Cagayan de Oro's Macabalan port, ships sail to Cebu, usually overnight. The crossing commonly takes around 10-12 hours. Operators on this route have included 2GO and Trans-Asia Shipping Lines, which is why many people search for "TransAsia CDO to Cebu". Schedules, vessels and the days of sailing change, so always confirm with the shipping company's official website or ticket office.

Cebu to Cagayan de Oro ship fare

Fares depend on the class (economy/open-air, tourist, cabin) and the operator. As a rough guide only, economy fares have often been in the range of around ₱1,000 to ₱2,000, with cabins costing more. Fares change with fuel prices and promos, so treat this as approximate and confirm before you travel.

LegApprox. timeNotes

CDO to Cebu (ship)10-12 hoursOvernight; arrive in Cebu in the morning

Route 2: Davao to Surigao, then Leyte to Cebu

This route spends more time on land and lets you see more of eastern Mindanao and Leyte.

  1. Davao to Surigao City by bus. The trip goes north via the Davao-Agusan road and Butuan, and commonly takes around 8-10 hours.
  2. Surigao (Lipata port) to Liloan, Southern Leyte by RoRo. The crossing of the Surigao Strait usually takes a few hours.
  3. Southern Leyte to a western Leyte port. Take a bus or van to ports such as Hilongos, Bato or Ormoc, which have ferry links to Cebu.
  4. Leyte to Cebu by ferry. Crossings to Cebu City take several hours depending on the port and boat type.

Some long-distance buses have historically run through-services from Mindanao to the Visayas or Manila, using the RoRo across the Surigao Strait. Availability changes, so ask at the Davao terminal.

Route 3: Direct ships from northern Mindanao

Besides Cagayan de Oro, other northern Mindanao ports have had direct sailings to Cebu, including Surigao, the Butuan area (Nasipit), Iligan and Ozamiz. If one of these fits your schedule better than CDO, check which operators currently serve it. Davao to Cagayan de Oro is the most common link, but a bus to Surigao or Butuan followed by a direct ship can also work.

Bonus: how to go from Cebu to Bohol

Many travellers continue from Cebu to Bohol. The quickest way is a fast craft from Cebu City to Tagbilaran, which usually takes around 2 hours. RoRo ferries (handy if you have a car) also run from Cebu to several Bohol ports and take longer. Fares and schedules change, so confirm with the operators. Our Bohol day trip guide has the details.
