The cost of living Cebu residents face in 2026 is moderate by Asian city standards and usually a little higher than in Davao, mainly because of rent in central Metro Cebu. A single person can live simply in either city on a modest local salary, while a comfortable expat lifestyle in a modern condo costs several times more. Below are approximate monthly ranges for rent, food, transport, utilities and internet, plus sample budgets.

All figures are rough estimates in Philippine pesos for 2026. Prices vary by neighbourhood, season and lifestyle and change often, so use them as a guide and check current listings and prices before deciding.

Rent in Cebu and Davao

Rent is the biggest difference between the two cities.

Cebu: areas such as Cebu IT Park, Cebu Business Park, Banilad and parts of Mactan have the highest rents, with modern condos aimed at professionals and expats. Mandaue, Talisay, Consolacion and areas further from the centre are cheaper but mean longer commutes in traffic. See our guide to apartments for rent in Cebu.

Davao: Lanang, Bajada and Ecoland have many condos and newer developments, while subdivisions further from the centre offer houses at lower rents. Davao's larger land area means more space for the money. Read our guide to houses for rent in Davao.

Food and groceries

Food costs are similar in both cities. Local markets like Carbon in Cebu and Bankerohan in Davao are cheapest for fish, meat, fruit and vegetables; supermarkets cost more but are convenient.

  • Carinderia (small eatery) meals of rice and one or two viands are the most affordable way to eat out.
  • Fast food and casual restaurants cost more per meal.
  • Imported goods such as cheese, wine and Western cereals can be expensive.

Davao has an edge for fruit, especially durian, pomelo and mangosteen in season, and both cities have excellent fresh seafood. For budget eats, see our guide to the cheapest and most delicious food in Cebu.

Transport

  • Jeepneys and modern jeepneys: the cheapest way to get around, with short trips costing small amounts.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: comfortable but add up quickly if used daily.
  • Motorbike ownership: many locals use motorbikes; factor in fuel, registration and insurance.
  • Traffic: Metro Cebu traffic is generally heavier, especially to and from Mactan and Mandaue, which can raise transport costs and time.

Plan longer trips around commute times, not just distance.

Utilities and internet

Electricity in Cebu is supplied mainly by Visayan Electric in the metro area, and in Davao by Davao Light. Rates change monthly. Water is supplied by local water districts; in Davao, see our guide to paying your Davao City Water District bill.

Fibre plans from the major providers are available in both cities at similar prices. Mobile prepaid data is cheap and widely available.

Cebu or Davao: which is cheaper?

Davao is usually slightly cheaper, mainly for rent and transport, and many residents value its calmer pace. Cebu costs a little more but offers more jobs in the BPO and tourism sectors, more international flights and easy island trips. For many people the deciding factor is lifestyle rather than cost; our Cebu vs Davao comparison can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of living in Cebu per month?

A single local professional might spend roughly ₱24,000-₱41,000 a month, while an expat in a furnished condo may spend roughly ₱52,000-₱100,000 or more. These are approximate 2026 estimates and vary by lifestyle.

Is Davao cheaper than Cebu?

Generally yes, by a modest margin. Rent and transport are often a little lower in Davao, while food and internet cost about the same.

How much is rent in Cebu?

Approximate ranges are ₱3,000-₱8,000 for a room or bedspace, ₱8,000-₱18,000 for a basic studio or one-bedroom, and ₱18,000-₱40,000 or more for a furnished condo in central areas. Always check current listings.

Can I live in Cebu on ₱20,000 a month?
