The Davao hotel workers deaths on October 5 remain under investigation, with authorities saying the cause has not yet been established. Three members of the engineering team at Dusit Thani Residence Davao were found dead during maintenance work, and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) detected carbon monoxide at the site, according to reports by SunStar Davao and Manila Bulletin.
What Happened
Manila Bulletin reported that the three staff died in the early hours of Monday, October 5, while doing maintenance work. The BFP said it received a call at about 2:36 a.m. about a possible gas leak and a hazardous-materials incident involving a confined-space retrieval. Its team arrived at about 3:25 a.m., and the retrieval operation ended at about 5:09 a.m.
The reports describe the location as a sewage treatment facility, while the hotel's statement refers to a lifting station. Out of respect for the families, we are not naming the workers.
What Responders Found
Responders' air monitoring detected carbon monoxide at 50 parts per million inside the area, according to the reports. SunStar noted that fire officials said prolonged exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can lead to suffocation and death. Rescuers took precautions, including ventilating the space, before entering to retrieve the bodies.
The BFP was careful, however, not to draw a conclusion. BFP Senior Inspector Frances Marie Sendrijas said the presence of carbon monoxide does not by itself establish that it caused the deaths.
Investigation Status
As of Wednesday, October 7, authorities had not determined the cause of death. The Davao City Police Office, through spokesperson Lt. Col. Ma. Teresita Gaspan, said the investigation is ongoing and that police are awaiting autopsy results. Manila Bulletin reported that the families initially suspected electrocution and are seeking answers.
The hotel confirmed the deaths without naming a cause. It said it is cooperating fully with the authorities and has suspended similar work pending a full review.
What It Means for Davao Residents and Visitors
Nothing in the reports suggests a wider public danger, and the incident was confined to a maintenance area of the property. Still, it is a reminder of how hazardous confined spaces such as sewage systems, pump rooms and tanks can be. Gases can build up without any smell or warning, which is why trained teams use air monitoring and ventilation before anyone goes in.
