How to get to Siargao

By air

Siargao's Sayak Airport in Del Carmen receives flights from Manila and Cebu, and from other cities at times depending on airline schedules. Cebu is a popular connecting point for travellers coming from Davao and other southern cities. From the airport, General Luna is roughly 45 minutes to an hour away by van or tricycle. Look for fare promos with our guide to cheap flights in the Philippines.

By sea via Surigao City

If flights are full or expensive, fly or travel overland to Surigao City, then take a ferry or fast craft to Dapa Port on Siargao. Fast boats usually take around 1.5 to 2 hours. From Dapa, General Luna is a short ride. We cover the full route, including the overland option from Manila, in our guide to travelling from Manila to Surigao.

Things to do in Siargao

Surf Cloud 9

Cloud 9 in General Luna is Siargao's most famous wave, a powerful reef break that put the island on the world surfing map. The wooden boardwalk and viewing tower are worth visiting even if you don't surf. Cloud 9 is for experienced surfers, but beginners have plenty of options: local surf schools take newcomers to gentler breaks nearby, and lessons with a board and instructor are easy to arrange in GL.

Island hopping: Naked, Daku and Guyam

The classic three-island tour leaves from General Luna.

  • Naked Island: A bare sandbar with no trees or shade, surrounded by clear turquoise water.
  • Daku Island: The largest of the three, with a long beach, coconut trees and a fishing community. Lunch stops are usually here.
  • Guyam Island: A tiny, picture-perfect island with palm trees, ideal for photos and a final swim.

Bring sunscreen, a hat and water, as there is very little shade, especially on Naked Island.

Sugba Lagoon

Sugba Lagoon in Del Carmen is a calm, emerald lagoon surrounded by mangroves and limestone. You reach it by boat through the mangroves. Visitors swim, kayak, paddleboard and jump from a diving platform. Del Carmen is also home to one of the largest mangrove forests in the region.

Magpupungko Rock Pools

In Pilar, on the island's east coast, Magpupungko has natural tidal pools that appear among the rocks at low tide. Check the tide schedule before going: at high tide the pools are covered by the sea and can be dangerous.

Other highlights

  • Coconut palm viewpoints along the roads between General Luna and other towns.
  • Maasin River, with its famous bent coconut tree and rope swing.
  • Day trips to Sohoton Cove on nearby Bucas Grande, if time and weather allow.

Best time to visit Siargao

Siargao can be visited all year, but conditions change by season.

PeriodWhat to expect
Roughly March to early autumnOften calmer weather, good for island hopping and lagoons
Around September to NovemberOften the best surf season, and the busiest time for surfers
Around December to FebruaryWetter and windier on the east coast; sea trips can be affected

The island is famous for an international surfing competition usually held at Cloud 9 around September or October. Accommodation fills up then, so book early. For more on seasonal weather in the south, see our best time to visit Cebu and Davao guide.

Siargao budget guide

Siargao has options for every budget, but prices have risen as the island has become more popular. These are rough daily ranges per person and will change, so confirm current prices when booking.

Travel styleApproximate daily budget (excluding flights)
Backpacker (dorms, local eateries, shared tours)around ₱1,500 to ₱3,000
Mid-range (private rooms, cafes, private tours)around ₱3,500 to ₱7,000
Comfort (boutique resorts, restaurants, private transfers)₱8,000 and up

Scooter rentals, surf lessons and island hopping tours are usually priced per day or per trip; ask several operators. Bring enough cash, as ATMs can run low or go offline on busy weekends, and not every shop accepts cards or e-wallets. Plan your total with our trip budget calculator.

Getting around the island

  • Scooter rental: The most popular option for confident riders. Wear a helmet, carry your licence and avoid riding at night on unlit roads.
  • Tricycles and habal-habal: Good for short trips around General Luna.
  • Private van or tour: Best for groups and for longer trips to Pilar, Del Carmen or the airport.

Tips for a responsible trip

  • Respect the reef. Don't stand on coral and use reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Reduce plastic. Bring a refillable water bottle; waste management is a challenge on small islands.
  • Support local. Eat at family-run carinderias and book tours with local operators.
  • Be typhoon-aware. Siargao was badly hit by Typhoon Odette (Rai) in December 2021. Monitor PAGASA bulletins during your stay.
