Home / World News / Philippines Maintains Friendship with China While Claiming Kalayaan Island, Benham Rise

In a speech by President Rodrigo Duterte before the Filipino community in Saudi Arabia 11 hours ago as of writing, he cleared himself out about what he said on the issue of raising a flag on the Kalayaan Island on June 12.

He said:

“I would like to correct myself along the way dito. I said I will go to Kalayaan Island, Pagasa on June 12 to raise the Filipino flag there. (A round of applause) Wala wala yan lagi mahirap sige pakpak wala pang takot. tapos ang China…na sabi please do not do that kasi…Sabi ko the ten remaining islands there, agawan to ng lupa eh. Usap kami ng China sabi why are you…Well..in the Philippines there’s a rocus there there’s a war. Somebody might use it as a base for the battery of missiles. So I’m claiming it. I’m not gonna put any offensive weapons.

So andun nah. Atin na yun. Ang Benham Rise, on the right side. Sabi nila atin rin yun. Which I agree. Atin yon So lets name it the Philippine Ridge. Pang takot man lang yan. Alangan.”
