How Big is the Davao International Airport and How Long is the Runway?

Well, as far as my eyes can see and as far as I saw the Davao airport from a plane when it was about to touchdown from Cebu Mactan International Airport, I could tell it really is BIIIG.

Imagine Davao City, the largest city in the Philippines, and take note, the largest city in the Philippines in terms of area (according to what I’ve heard from many Dabawenyos and Dabawenyas) has but a small airport. No way. That can’t be. Impossible. A big, a large, largest city in the whole world has a small airport. So it’s big. I mean, REALLY BEEEG!

How really big? How long? How many meters is the runway? or How many kilometers? How big is the airport terminal?

Ok. According to Wikipedia, the Davao International Airport runway is precisely 3,000 meters. Can you believe that? Exactly 3,000 meters. No point 1 nor point 2 nor any extra inch or millimeter. It’s accurately Three-Thousand meters or 3 kilometers.

Imagine how could they have measured that runway accurately? They must have used a very very looooong tape measure just to reach and measure 3000 meters. But no. They have sophisticated, hi-technology metric system gadget that James Bond use in measuring highways like runways. Whatever.

So before they put some asphalt and cement and asphalt and cement and asphalt, they need to measure the length of the lot to become a strip of hard ground for aircraft to land and take off.

But is the Davao International Airport the largest airport in the Philippines?

According to my humble research, no. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport is the largest airport in the Philippines. The primary runway is 3,737 meters. The secondary runway has 2,258 meters. Mmmmmmmmm. 737 meters longer than Davao’s.

The second largest or second longest runway in the Philippines is the Cebu Mactan International Airport. The runway measures 3,300 meters.

Third is the Clark International Airport. It has 3,200 meter runway with a width of 60 meters. Mmmmmmmm. Loooooong.

Fourth is, well, no other than the Davao International Airport–also known as–Francisco Bangoy International Airport, which, as aforementioned, has precisely 3,000 meters. There!

What about the airport terminal?

Davao International Airport Terminal

Davao International Airport Terminal

Well, as I’ve said, it’s big. But not huge, Not as big as Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Cebu Mactan International Airport; since the Davao airport terminal can only accommodate 2 million passengers a year. Cebu Mactan airport terminal can handle 4.5 million passengers.

Cebu Mactan International Airport Terminal

NAIA can handle 32.1 million passengers a year, and it is the 34th busiest airport in the whole world. Whew!

Check out the video I’ve taken last December 2011 aboard Airphil Express when it was about to land the Davao International airport runway. Awesome video I should say. Yay!

So there you go. Hope you learn something from my post. Wooooooot!

The last time I entered that building was like 2009 and that’s too long ago. Tsk tsk. I wish I could visit again maybe this year? :)
