In President Duterte’s speech on his visit to Brunei, he revealed his shenanigans and truancies in high school days. While he had got a grade of 75 (probably) in some of his subjects, his classmates and friends had high grades like Jess Dureza who even became a valedictorian in high school. Jess Dureza is President Duterte’s adviser for peace process.

Among his friends who were mentioned who were valedictorians are Sonny Dominguez, Perfecto Yasay, Delfin Lorenzana, and Hermogenes Esperon. Sonny Domingguez is Duterte’s Finance Secretary. Perfecto Yasay is the current Secretary of Foreign Affairs. While Lorenzana is the current Defense Secretary, Esperon is Duterte’s adviser for National Security.

The crowd laughed while Duterte was narrating the story. After introducing his friends and classmates who were valedictorians, he said:

“Tingnan mo nga naman ang buhay. Tingnan mo ang buhay. Mga trabahante ko lahat (Look at life, these people are just my workers).”

Duterte’s presidency made it look like an irony to what he was when he was still a student.

Call it paradox, call it sarcasm. I want to call it, a PHENOMENON.
