Home / Culture / Lampakanay for Ropes

I’m rushing this post since I have some information that needs to be corrected from my previous post about abaca entitled “An Interesting Abaca for an Old Lady.”

I knew it. The ones I were seeing here near my area in Lapu-Lapu did not  actually come from Abaca fiber. The tied leaves or fiber sheathes are called “Lampakanay.” A group of ladies told me about this when I passed by them carrying these sheathes.

I’ve assumed those were Abaca sheathes. But no. Here are the pictures that I’ve taken as I came to see them near my place who began to work these things up for ropes. These were the leaves I had seen that an old lady were working from my previous post. These are actually called Lampakanay.

Lampakanay is a firm, aquatic herb that is used for making mats, baskets, ropes, and other braided furniture. These plants are most abundantly growing in Cebu, particularly in Mactan. Although abaca is also a material used for ropes and fabric, lamapakanay is the common plant which can be seen most in Southern part of Mactan. Interesting, isn it? So I guess I have to revise my old article here about this plant which I mistakenly called abaca.

Here is the video that I’ve taken from the people who have just harvested these sheathes of lampakanay:

Here are the Abaca fibers:
